Global Arbitration Review (GAR) has published its 2022 review, one of its annual, yearbook-style reports. This year's review, which covers the most substantial recent international arbitration developments across the region, includes two chapters authored by our Clifford Chance international arbitration specialists.
Mining Arbitrations in Africa
Our chapter on Mining Arbitrations in Africa provides a concise overview of the risks and characteristics of mining disputes in Africa in the context of the current investment climate, and provides an update on mining arbitrations in Africa over the past year.
Key discussion points include:
- volatility associated with the continuing coronavirus pandemic and conflict in some African states increasing the risk of mining disputes in 2022; and
- increased demand for green transition materials, such as cobalt, copper, rare earths and lithium, presenting an opportunity for investors and economic growth across many African states, which may increase the potential for disputes to arise.

United Arab Emirates
While, with 2021 marking the 50th year since the foundation of the United Arab Emirates, our chapter on the UAE focuses on key developments onshore, the DIFC and the ADGM.
Notable developments include:
- the consolidation of arbitration centres in Dubai;
- amendments to arbitration legislation in the ADGM;
- the adoption of a Monday-Friday working week (from January 2022); and
- further consideration of the 2018 UAE Arbitration Law by the UAE courts, with mixed results for parties seeking to enforce arbitral agreements and awards.
